Vitoria is a city dedicated to sport. Eloquent proof
of this statement are the large numbers of people who use the city's
many sports centres on a daily basis.
The best-known exponents of Vitoria's enthusiasm for sport are as follows:
Juanito Oiarzabal, has the world record with 20 mountain peaks of more
than 8000 m to his credit. In 2003 he obtained the award for the best sportsperson
of the year, given by the Sporting Press Association as well as the Sabino Arana
Prize for sports.
Martín Fiz: among his many achievements, he was World Marathon Champion in 1995,
and runner-up in 1997; he took fourth and sixth place in the Olympic Games held
in 1996 and 2000 respectively and was European champion in 1994.
Joseba Beloki, took third and second place in the Tour de France in 2001 and 2002,
respectively.
Almudena Cid, is the second most veteran gymnast in the world. She has been awarded
the sports merit medal. Among her many sporting achievements, she was finalist at
the Atlanta 96 and Sidney 2000 Olympic Games and took art in six world championships,
eight European championships and was Spanish champion on five occasions.
Jaione Ayastuy is one of the most successful athletes produced by Alava and the one who has
gained the highest level of renown in the world of international sailing. She sails in the
Vaurien class and among other prizes, she was world champion in 2003 and 2004, runner-up in
2002, and in 2002 and 2003, she won both the Spanish and European championships.
Eneko Llanos, is 2003 world long-distance triathlon champion. Among his international
successes, he was second in the 2004 European Championship, first in the X-Terra world
championship and also took part in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Just 18 years old, Diego Barrio is one of the great promises in world bike trials. In 2003,
he was crowned champion of the world and Spanish champion.
Likewise, the city's basketball and football teams compete in the first divisions
of their respective National Leagues and have won a large number of important titles
over recent years.
The city's basketball team, Tau-Baskonia,
was 2001-2002 league champion and won the King's Cup in 2002 and 2004.
Its football team, Alavés,
has taken part in several European championships over recent years and was runner-up at the final of the UEFA cup in 2001.
